This could have been so much worse.

In most States it is a misdemeanor to leave your car unattended while the engine is running

(Especially with young children in it!)

Come on people! Use that melon on top of your shoulders!

In this case, an opportunistic thug saw a chance and took it.

What do you think she would have done with those kids once she got to Mexico?

Yeah not nice to think about.
