Constitutional Carry is now in effect for the state of Idaho! For those who aren’t familiar with the term, it is permit-less concealed carry. Law-abiding residents can now carry a concealed weapon (Where allowed by law) without a permit. Idaho is one of a handful of states who have taken this important step. They are acknowledging that a citizen’s right applies when the gun is visible or concealed.
Naysayers argue that this will turn Constitutional Carry states into the “Wild West”. Surely this will end with blood running in the streets! I do agree that a lack of training could result in an increase in accidental shootings, and Governor Butch Otter echoed these sentiments in his rebuke of the state legislature. Nevertheless, it is a citizen’s right to carry, with or without training, and that must be respected above all else.
It’s interesting to note that it was already legal to openly carry a loaded gun prior to passing this new law. In fact, before this law it was still legal to conceal a shotgun or rifle without a permit. This law simply shifts the advantage away from criminals, and levels the field so law-abiding citizens can exercise their rights.
Time will tell how this law will play out for Idaho. If any of the other states who passed it are an indication of the future, Idaho will see a reduction in crime. It will be interesting to see which states take the next step in expanding gun owners’ Second Amendment rights by passing Constitutional Carry.
