The Question raised in this incident: Is It SMART To FIRE THROUGH a BARRIER (such as a Door) When You have Not Identified what is on the other side? 99% of the time I would say NO. The reason being if you live in an urban area/neighborhood, the chance for you to MISS the perp and HIT an innocent bystander or worse yet, a stray round go through your neighbor’s home and wound/kill somebody is HIGH. But in this instance, when the HOMEOWNER asked the person several times to ID themselves and they said nothing and just continued to KICK THE DOOR DOWN, the homeowner obviously was in FEAR FOR HIS LIFE and had no choice but to DEFEND HIMSELF. The advice in this article is sound. -SF
WITN TV News reports this week (5/23/2016) in Wilson, North Carolina police say a home invasion attempt happened on Winoca Road 1:15 a.m. on Monday morning.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds outside the home.
The homeowner told police he heard someone trying to kick in the door to his house. He warned the intruder to stop and then fired shots through the door.
The would-be burglar was taken to Wilson Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Officers have identified the dead man as a local 36-year-old.
After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, police say no charges will be filed against the homeowner whose name is not being released.
Comments:
Most likely a valid shooting as apparently only the bad guy was hit. That being said, shooting through something you can’t see through carries tremendous risk.
Always try verbal warnings to get some information about who is outside. If that does not help, hide behind cover across the room while calling 911.
Experience says the cops will not arrive in time but they will tape your 911 call, your warnings to the intruder and your shots if you need to shoot. Create a witness for yourself on the 911 tape!
Don’t panic, have a plan and be smart.

My only “issue” about the ADVICE offered in this article is that — I am not waiting around asking a bunch of questions while someone is knocking down my door! Who are you? and no answer tells me all I need to know!!

I understand where you are coming from Lisa, but here is the thing and take it from someone who has witnessed this firsthand. The issue is not so much asking questions as to who is busting down your door as it is being RESPONSIBLE for every bullet you fire..in most CCL classes they will tell you that “each bullet you fire in self-defense will have a Lawyer attached to it”… now this is not to say that as Civilians we should be “hesitant” to defend ourselves, absolutely not, but at the same time we cannot be RECKLESS. I have a friend who spent 17 months in Prison and had to file for Bankruptcy for wounding a by-stander in a legally justified self-defense shooting. Did he mean to do it? Absolutely not, but bullets do crazy things and a richochet hit a lady in the leg and she was permanently disabled. Can we control the bullet once we fire it? No, but we can do our best to MINIMIZE the RISK. My lawyer gave me the same advice as in this article…NEVER depend on 911, but use it to CREATE AN AUDIO RECORD FOR YOUR LEGAL DEFENSE!
All you have spoken here is very good advice. There is only one thing that I would do differently and that is I would have waited until the door was kicked open and the jerk was inside the lip of the draw (door facing) then I would have shot them between their eyes.
In New York, the home owner in this situation would have been arrested as no entry was physically made. Ridiculous, but that is what the liberal legislature has done to protect their voting block/criminal base.
