Angela Montoya did not know any of the 28 military veterans who were buried Tuesday morning at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. But she felt compelled to come to the ceremony and present flowers to honor them, given that no one had claimed their remains.
“It’s so sad that no one claimed them,” she said. “I wanted to give thanks to them for all they’ve done.”
She wasn’t alone. About 250 people, including military personnel, veterans and civilians, showed up for the Forgotten Heroes Funeral for the 28 veterans, who died in Bernalillo County between January 2011 and June 2014. All but one of the veterans were men.
