This is the second installment about Drones and the CO. The first one can be read HERE.

As Drone (UAV) Technology grows, so will the expanding creativity in how to exploit it. Add to this the growing concern and at times, outright resentment, of how the Military and Local, State and Federal Law Enforcement are using drones to kill innocent by-standers and invade citizens privacy rights and it is no wonder the criminal elements and even law-abiding citizenry are fighting “fire with fire” and using drones also.
Yes folks, Criminal organizations and Drug Cartels have officially jumped on the Drone bandwagon; after witnessing the success of Google and Amazon, cartels the world over have followed in the 21st century entrepreneurial spirit and started their own drone fleets. The only difference is these drones are not delivering wi-fi or the latest NY Times Best-Seller from Amazon but are out making cross-border narcotic house calls, spying on local law enforcement and keeping a birds eye watch on their marijuana grow ops and Breaking Bad meth houses.
This phenomenon has also created a new buzz word for the DHS to scare us all with: “Terror Drones”. It appears ever since a drunk government employee flew a drone on the White House Lawn, the PhD brainiacs within our Government realized “Hey, somebody could really fu#$ some shit up with one of those!!” I am sure this is not the first time a drunk government employee was the cause of such a national security firestorm (or realization that the United States Government is woefully behind in how they see, think and use technology) I submit the OPM Hack as a prime example; they were using outdated Windows XP software, WHAT DID THEY EXPECT!?
Not that Terrorist are not already using drones. ISIS has been reported to be using drones for recon and intel gathering in Syria and Iraq, Many “DC think-tankers” have drew attention to the fact these drones lack “technical refinement” and are homemade “DIY” jobs that are most likely made out of secondhand parts. But what these academic idiots fail to recognize is you don’t need a million dollar drone to take pictures, record HD video, map troop movements or even drop bombs of semtex on your head. It’s the same way you did not need a million dollar explosive to blow up a Humvee full of soldiers in Iraq; all you needed was a discarded 155mm Shell, a charge, some det-cord and a cell phone; total cost, about $20. They called it an IED and it was one of the most effective tools of the Iraqi and Afghan insurgency.
The essence of guerilla warfare has always been simplicity, and that is why drone warfare will continue to be used by irregular forces the world over from here on out.
So where does this leave the Martial Civilian? Personally, I think drones have a secure place in the Civilian Operators toolbox. The reason for this is it does not require a huge support unit to operate. All it needs is an operator and a target. Add to this you can make one quite easily out of spare parts in your garage.
I can think of several practical uses for drones for the Civilian Operator in the areas of intelligence gathering and security:
- Forward and Perimeter Security. Think of it as a Roving CCTV camera on your property.
- AO Mapping. A quick and easy way to recon and map the area you intend to operate in.
- Delivery of small, light supplies in field
- Other Offensive Operations yet to be discussed
