Recently I acquired a Saiga .308 with a 21″ barrel from my good friend Wild Bill. The Saiga .308 has been on my list for some time, but I have been putting my other AK’s mod jobs at the top of the list, so I just never got around to it.
Converting the Saiga from the standard hunting stock to a AK style pistol grip and stock can be done with several different kits available from Carolina Shooters Supply or Mississippi Auto Arms. Depending on your choice of stock (standard or folding) the cost can range from $150 to $300. This is an intermediate gunsmithing job, but with patience and a few tools, the average joe can do it himself. I seriously considered taking on this task just for the pure adventure of it, since I believe the more hands on you get with your guns, the better shooter you become; but alas, Marc Krebs from Krebs Customs convinced me otherwise with his Custom made Saiga Thumbhole Stock.
At $75 shipped to your door, this stock IMHO is the best option out there for the Saiga devotees out there who do not wish to go the Conversion route. It gives you a rock solid pistol grip and a stock that is not too bulky. The adjustable cheekpiece swivels and is padded with a black automotive interior vinyl. The rifle butt is not padded, which honestly is really not needed for this gun, but I think some shooters might like it padded with the same material as the cheek piece for comfort and fit..Marc, you listening?
Coming from Krebs Custom, one should expect nothing less than QUALITY, and that is what I got. The stock slipped in the rifle like it belonged there, all that I had to do was drill new screw holes and tighten her down.
Next on the list is a Red Star Trigger job, K-Var Scope mount and Scope.
