I recently acquired the new Khyber Optics MDO (Mini Dot Optic) from my friend NC Scout over at Brushbeater and I wasted no time mounting it on my go-to training rifle, my Yugo M70AB2 warhorse with an Ultimak rail.
Previously I had been running a very old Burris Fastfire II 4MOA, and while it was a hella dependable optic, it had a TON of miles on (and some battle scarring) it and was in need of an upgrade!
I chose to mount the MDO with the supplied riser base versus mounting it low to co-witness with my front irons. I did this mainly for a change of pace as I have always ran a red dot mounted low. To show you guys a comparison, I mounted both bases.
This is the riser base:
The biggest advantage to mounting the Riser base is it gives you quick acquisition of your sights when you mount the rifle while allowing you to still see your irons below. One of the keys to speeed is eliminating any unnecessary movement when you present the weapon. Since your sight line axis is higher with this mount, it keeps you from having to lower your head to find the dot. It’s a small movement, but when taking quick snap shots, milliseconds count!
This is the low/co-witness base:
The MDO features three (3) reticle patterns in either red or green. (*Both colors are not available together, you must choose your reticle color when ordering.)
36 MOA Crosshair Circle with a 3 MOA Dot center
3 MOA Dot
Stand alone 36 MOA Crosshair Circle (No Center Dot)
To turn ON press the (+) button. To turn OFF press the (-) button.
To cycle reticles simply hold down the (+) top power button.
The 10 Brightness Settings are acessed via the (+) and (-) buttons.
In addition, this sight has the “Shake Awake” feature where if the optic is not bumped or moved for 20 seconds, the dot will turn off and the optic will enter a low power state. When the optic is bumped or moved again the optic will immeditaely power on to the pre-selected reticle and brightness.
Adjusting windage and elevation was a breeze as well. You can use a small flathead screwdriver or a dime to adjust. The MDO is set to 1/2 MOA per click. (At 100 yards that would be equal to a 1/2 inch per click.)
The Khyber Optics MDO (Mini Dot Optic) is a small closed emitter dot optic suitable as a standalone sight, partnered with a larger scope or mounted on a handgun. Featuring a 6061 aluminum housing and three mounting heights with the included mounts, this is a multirole optic for any small arms platform. The MDO features a shake-awake to preserve power on an already class leading battery life of over 50,000 hours. Powered by a common 2032 battery, this optic is a strong choice for a truck gun, EDC, or duty weapon.
