With Socialism and Communism currently rearing it’s ugly head all across the world, I think it is important that we be reminded of it’s horrible dark past.
The Exam (A Vizsga) is set in Hungary in 1957 after the bloody Hungarian uprising of 1956 has just been suppressed by the Soviet Union and the iron hand of Communism proper is descending on it’s proxy neighbor with a vengeance. It follows a young defense officer as his loyalty is tested by his mentor in a highly deceptive and dangerous spy game.
The movie aims to depict how life was experienced under Communist rule in Hungary, when fealty to the Party invaded and poisoned all basic human relationships. The Communists killed off interpersonal trust and replaced it with paranoia, in much the same was as is depicted in Solzhenitsyn’s nonfiction books. The movie resonates all the more because it was produced entirely in Hungary, which suffered two humiliating defeats (initial invasion; and rushing of the counter-Revolution) under the brutal hand of the Soviets.
The Movie is in Hungarian with English subtitles and can be seen on Amazon Prime.
