Gen. Randy George, the US Army’s top officer, was fired by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on April 2, 2026, during the ongoing war in Iran.
No official reason was given. Two other generals were removed the same day, bringing the total number of senior military leaders fired under Hegseth to over a dozen. George served for more than 40 years, including combat deployments in the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was nominated as Army Chief of Staff by President Biden in 2023. The Pentagon confirmed his departure with a brief statement on X thanking him for his service.
Senator Chris Murphy said it is likely that experienced generals are being fired for telling Hegseth his war plans are “unworkable, disastrous, and deadly.”
