Storm Preparedness Essential Gear: NOAA Radio

This year, without a doubt, for Texas, has been one of the worst year for storms that I can remember. High winds, torrential rain, tornadoes, hail. flash flooding..and all of it hitting us at once in some areas.

We have discussed at length about the need for the CO to have a solid Emergency Plan for himself and his family for every type of Disaster there is. I would remind all of you to routinely go over this plan with your loved ones; especially your Tornado and Flooding plan. Just the other day, we had a F2 tornado touch down not 60 miles from us; it can happen in an instant, so be ready!

Besides a plan, one of the essential pieces of kit you need to have on hand is a NOAA Radio. These radio’s are essential to stay in touch with NWS (National Weather Service) Tornado Warnings and Watches. Oftentime, your local news is not dependable enough, as you typically have to be able to get a satellite signal or phone signal to get them. A radio is not dependent on telephone lines or satellite signals. Plus, often times, these storms hit at odd hours in the morning, way beyond local broadcast times.

There are several models of NOAA Radios out there, but the one I found that suits me best the Kaito KA-500. I liked this particular model as what you got for the price was not bad; it is equipped with both a hand crank charger, solar charger and cell-phone/USB charger all in one (make sure they have your particular model cell phone adapter). The radio itself is easy to work, the NOAA stations are preset, so flip one switch and you got it. Plus, it has a handy LED flashlight if you should need one.

So there it is, not a bad “piece of mind” tool for under $50.

Stay Alert, Stay Prepared, Stay Armed and Stay Dangerous!
