When I saw this story, I have to be honest…it did not surprise me, not because of the current administration and their total disregard of American values and their campaign to castrate American Greatness but because most everywhere I go, I see gross violations of flag etiquette and code. Some may be out of ignorance, but most I feel are out of pure laziness. As a veteran, I feel very strongly in how the flag is treated, so I feel it is my duty to give a quick refresher in basic flag etiquette and code.
The biggest infractions I see locally are:
- Not taking the flag down during inclement weather (Code 174c), most people believe that it does not matter if you are using an “All Weather Flag”, but this is not true. The Flag, should be regarded as a living object and respected regardless of its construction. “Inclement Weather” not only includes rain, but also high winds, which can rip a flag to shreds. Use common sense: if a storm is blowing in, take the flag down ASAP.
- Not replacing a flag that has been damaged (176K) This one really irks me. Continuing to display a flag that has been damaged is PURE LAZINESS. If a flag has been ripped, stained or faded, it first needs to be properly disposed of by burning and then replaced.
Bottom Line: If you are going to fly a flag, learn the rules, otherwise, don’t bother. Too many men, better than you and me shed blood for it..it deserves respect. And a final word to the American Athletic Olympic Delegation and the US Olympic Committee: If you allow the US flag to be tipped to ANY person or THING, you should be fired and brought up on federal charges for violation of the US Flag Code.
Stay Dangerous.
