His predictions are always wrong.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2014\/01\/27\/going-the-distance-david-remnick\">New Yorker interview<\/a> published in late January, 2014, President Obama dismissed concerns regarding ISIS:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u00a0think\u00a0the\u00a0analogy\u00a0we\u00a0use\u00a0around\u00a0here\u00a0sometimes, and I think\u00a0is\u00a0accurate, is if a JV team puts on Lakers uniforms, that doesn\u2019t make them Kobe Bryant. I\u00a0think\u00a0there is a distinction between the capacity and reach of a bin Laden and a network that is actively planning major terrorist plots against the homeland versus jihadists who are engaged in various local power struggles and disputes, often sectarian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> <em>But that JV team jus[t] took over Fallujah.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE PRESIDENT:<\/strong>\u00a0 I understand.\u00a0 But when you say took over Fallujah \u2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>And I don\u2019t know for how long.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE PRESIDENT:\u00a0<\/strong> But let\u2019s just keep in mind, Fallujah is a profoundly conservative Sunni city in a country that, independent of anything\u00a0we\u00a0do, is deeply divided along sectarian lines. And how\u00a0we\u00a0think\u00a0about terrorism has to be defined and specific enough that it doesn\u2019t lead us to\u00a0think\u00a0that any horrible actions that take place\u00a0around\u00a0the world that are motivated in part by an extremist Islamic ideology is a direct threat to us or something that\u00a0we\u00a0have to wade into.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The president\u2019s \u201cJV\u201d comment was so striking that Remnick, in his article, referred to it as \u201can uncharacteristically flip analogy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the world now knows, ISIS has become a major terrorist group that controls vast wealth, territory and the allegiance of many thousands (and millions if one includes sympathizers) around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Paris has been struck by a well-coordinated series of terror attacks, killing scores of people through suicide bombings and shootings &#8211;\u00a0including hostages taken in a concert hall. Screams of <em>Allah Akbar<\/em> were heard.
