Fought between July and November\u00a01917, both sides suffered heavy casualties and endured appalling conditions. The name Passchendaele has become synonymous with mud, blood and futility.<\/h2>\n<h2>In 1917,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwm.org.uk\/history\/field-marshal-sir-douglas-haig\">General Sir Douglas Haig<\/a>\u00a0planned a major offensive\u00a0to break out of the Ypres salient, which the Allies\u00a0had occupied since 1914.<\/h2>\n<h2>Haig&#8217;s vision was for\u00a0a war-winning breakthrough. He planned\u00a0to\u00a0capture the high ground around Ypres, as well as a key rail junction to the east, and then\u00a0advance on the German-occupied ports of the Belgian coast &#8211; critical to the U-Boat campaign.<\/h2>\n<h2>The battle failed to achieve Haig&#8217;s objectives. It lasted over 100 days.
