In recent years, major art collections have been tied to corrupt politicians and members of criminal groups across the region.<\/h2>\n<h2>As of 2023, Colombia\u2019s government agency tasked with managing assets seized by the state held an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eltiempo.com\/justicia\/servicios\/asi-es-el-patrimonio-de-arte-confiscado-por-la-sae-755659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inventory<\/a>\u00a0of more than 1,000 artworks, including two attributed to 17th-century Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens. In Guatemala, authorities\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.soy502.com\/articulo\/obras-arte-exministro-erick-archila-perdio-101567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confiscated<\/a>\u00a0over 120 artworks in 2021 from Erick Archila, a former energy and mines minister under President Otto P\u00e9rez Molina, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insightcrime.org\/news\/brief\/ex-guatemala-regime-likened-to-organized-crime-syndicate\/\">faces charges of illicit association and money laundering<\/a>.
