The IRA launched three homemade\u00a0mortar\u00a0shells\u00a0at\u00a010 Downing Street,\u00a0London, the headquarters of the\u00a0British government, in an attempt to assassinate\u00a0Prime Minister\u00a0John Major\u00a0and his\u00a0war cabinet, who were meeting to discuss the\u00a0Gulf War.<\/h2>\n<h2>One of the 140 pound (64 kg) mortar shells\u00a0exploded\u00a0in the back garden of Number 10, a few yards from the\u00a0Cabinet Office. Due to bomb-resistant windows, none of the\u00a0cabinet\u00a0were hurt, though four other people received minor injuries, including two\u00a0Metropolitan Police\u00a0officers.
