If you read Peter Brimelow\u2019s\u00a0Alien Nation<\/em>, you\u2019ll find that Haitian immigration was a problem even in the 90s, when then-President Bill Clinton was \u201cforced to order the interception of boats carrying would-be illegal immigrants from Haiti on the high seas\u201d because of America\u2019s \u201cinability to expel asylum seekers\u201d [Alien Nation<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0p.27].<\/h2>\n

A. M. Rosenthal \u00a0defended Haitian illegal immigration<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0because he himself had been an illegal immigrant in the 1930s\u2014brought by his father illegally \u00a0from Canada in the 1930s<\/a>, rather than fleeing Russia. Also defending Haitian illegals: \u201cconservative\u201d\u00a0P. J. O\u2019Rourke\u00a0<\/a>in the\u00a0American Spectator,\u00a0<\/em>who compared Clinton\u2019s defense of the US from Haitian rafters to the actions of the Ku Klux Klan. Rosenthal thought the Haitians were the same as the pre-1924 Ellis Island immigrants, and\u00a0O\u2019Rourke\u00a0<\/a>thought that just by illegally floating to America (endangering their own lives and the lives of their children) the Haitians had shown the gumption that America needs.<\/h2>\n

I\u2019m not sure that either man had met a Haitian at this point. Haitians are\u00a0different<\/a>\u00a0from Americans in a number of ways.<\/h2>\n

In Springfield, OH, which has been stricken by a huge wave of Haitian immigrants, they are still arguing about whether local Haitians are eating cats, dogs, and ducks and geese out of parks.<\/h2>\n
