That chapter generated so much discussion and debate that Adams\u2019s publisher urged him to turn it into an entire book, which he did, in the form of\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0847697223\/\">When in the Course of Human Events: Arguing the Case for Southern Secession<\/a><\/em>.<\/h2>\n<h2>Many of the reviewers of this second book, so confident were they that slavery was the one and only possible reason for both Abraham Lincoln\u2019s election to the presidency and the war itself, excoriated Adams for his analysis that the tariff issue was a major cause of the war.\u00a0<span id=\"more-7344\"><\/span>(Adams recently told me in an email that after one presentation to a New York City audience, he felt lucky that \u201cno one brought a rope.\u201d)<\/h2>\n<h2>My book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0761536418\/ludwigvonmisesinst\/\">The Real Lincoln<\/a><\/em>, has received much the same response with regard to the tariff issue.
