The spy agencies apparently monitored email traffic coming to Kaspersky and other antivirus companies from their customers in order to uncover reports about new malware attacks. A 2010 presentation indicates that the NSA\u2019s signals intelligence would pick out for analysis about ten new \u201cpotentially malicious files per day\u201d out of the hundreds of thousands that came into Kaspersky\u2019s network each day. NSA analysts would then check the malicious files against Kaspersky\u2019s antivirus software to make sure they weren\u2019t being detected by the software yet, then the NSA\u2019s hackers would \u201crepurpose the malware\u201d for their own use, checking periodically to determine when Kaspersky had added detection for the malware to its anti-virus software.<\/p>\n
