During the early days of the\u00a0Second Sino-Japanese War<\/a>, and on a greater scale\u00a0World War II<\/a>, the\u00a0Imperial Japanese Army<\/a>\u00a0invaded\u00a0Shanghai<\/a>\u00a0in what became known as the\u00a0Battle of Shanghai<\/a>. After holding back the Japanese for over 3 months, and suffering heavy losses, the Chinese army was forced to retreat due to the danger of being encircled. Lieutenant Colonel\u00a0Xie Jinyuan<\/a>\u00a0of the 524th Regiment of the under-equipped\u00a088th Division<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0National Revolutionary Army<\/a>, led 452 young officers and soldiers to defend\u00a0Sihang Warehouse<\/a>\u00a0against the\u00a03rd Imperial Japanese Division<\/a>\u00a0consisting of around 20,000 troops on a heroic suicidal last stand against the Japanese under an order by Generalissimo of Nationalist China,\u00a0Chiang Kai-shek<\/a>. The decision was made to provide a morale boost to the Chinese people after the losses of Beijing and Shanghai, and helped spur support from the Western powers, who were in full view of the battle from the\u00a0International Settlement in Shanghai<\/a>\u00a0just across the Suzhou Creek.<\/sup><\/h2>\n
