{"id":4263,"date":"2014-09-24T07:00:57","date_gmt":"2014-09-24T12:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hcstx.org\/?p=4263"},"modified":"2014-09-24T07:00:57","modified_gmt":"2014-09-24T12:00:57","slug":"skimming-awareness-v2-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetacticalhermit.com\/index.php\/2014\/09\/24\/skimming-awareness-v2-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Skimming Awareness v2.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hcsblogdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/09\/how-atm-skimming-works.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4264\" src=\"http:\/\/hcsblogdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/09\/how-atm-skimming-works.jpg?w=239\" alt=\"How-ATM-skimming-works\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, my technical staff wrote a very informative article about<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hcstx.org\/2012\/03\/16\/skimming-off-the-top\/\"> CREDIT CARD<strong> SKIMMING<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Between that time and now, the scam of skimming has exploded, contributing to the crimes of both <strong>identity theft<\/strong> and<strong> credit card<\/strong> <strong>fraud<\/strong> growing to epidemic proportions. The biggest reason for this explosion has been skimmers simply being more brazen, and creative, in how they get your information.<\/p>\n<p>To counter this, first and foremost, the standard precautions all still apply:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beware of the illegal placement of a skimming device at <strong>ANY<\/strong> location where you use your debit\/credit card, such as: ATM&#8217;s, gas pumps, POS (point of sale) terminals in grocery or convenience stores, etc. Often, these devices may be loose or feel out of place, just be aware before you swipe your card.<\/li>\n<li>Use RFID Cards, Protection Sleeves or Wallets to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wallet-Blocking-Secure-Credit-Identity\/dp\/B00CJHZLEW\"><strong>PROTECT<\/strong><\/a> your Credit Cards as you carry them around. Inexpensive and practical, this can protect you from the old &#8220;Passerby Skim&#8221;, where the thief simply runs the skimmer over your purse or wallet as he walks past you casually.<\/li>\n<li>Use Prepaid Cards that are not attached to personal bank accounts.<strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\"> I also strongly recommend this for ANY transaction you do online.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Also, as a<strong> PHISHING<\/strong> safeguard while online, if you use<strong> PAYPAL<\/strong> for online purchases, you might consider attaching your account to a major credit card versus your personal banking account, as all of your major credit card companies offer much more advanced safeguards for fraud (and resolution and refund for fraudulent purchases) than most banks do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the above, you also have to be aware of skimmers more brazen tactics, such as an employee of a department store, supermarket or fast-food chain, not only swiping your card for payment, but also swiping it again on their illegal skimmer. Just like in a self-defense situation, always <strong>WATCH THEIR HANDS<\/strong> during a payment transaction. Often, these people are very sublime in their tactics, distracting you with lively, engaging conversation..don&#8217;t fall for it! When money is involved, be all business!
