Taken together, the opposition is better equipped than any the world has seen in generations, according to Charles Lister, Middle East analyst and resident fellow at the Middle East\u00a0Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSyria represents the Afghanistan of the 21st century, but on steroids. The scale of jihadist militancy in Syria is one thing; the capability that they have acquired,\u201d Lister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p6g-j7mgC0Q&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=15m47s\">said<\/a>, \u201cis at least in my opinion unprecedented in modern\u00a0history.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullquote wysiwyg\">\u00a0The weapons on display in the Syrian war include some of the world\u2019s most advanced and deadly, thanks to the U.S.-led campaign against the Islamic State and Russia\u2019s own arrival in\u00a02015.<\/div>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of people have died in the war;\u00a0the <span class=\"caps\">UN<\/span> stopped counting at 191,000 three years ago, but estimates range from a quarter million to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/12\/world\/middleeast\/death-toll-from-war-in-syria-now-470000-group-finds.html?_r=0\">at least 470,000<\/a>.
