The scale of jihadist militancy in Syria is one thing; the capability that they have acquired,\u201d Lister\u00a0said<\/a>, \u201cis at least in my opinion unprecedented in modern\u00a0history.\u201d<\/p>\n Hundreds of thousands of people have died in the war;\u00a0the UN<\/span> stopped counting at 191,000 three years ago, but estimates range from a quarter million to\u00a0at least 470,000<\/a>.
