Constitutional Carry is now in effect for the state of Idaho! For those who aren\u2019t familiar with the term, it is permit-less concealed carry. Law-abiding residents can now carry a concealed weapon (Where allowed by law) without a permit. Idaho is one of a handful of states who have taken this important step. They are acknowledging that a citizen\u2019s right applies when the gun is visible or concealed.<\/p>\n
Naysayers argue that this will turn Constitutional Carry states into the \u201cWild West\u201d. Surely this will end with blood running in the streets! I do agree that a lack of training could result in an increase in accidental shootings, and Governor Butch Otter echoed these sentiments in his rebuke of the state legislature. Nevertheless, it is a citizen\u2019s right to carry, with or without training, and that must be respected above all else.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s interesting to note that it was already legal to openly carry a loaded gun prior to passing this new law. In fact, before this law it was still legal to conceal a shotgun or rifle without a permit. This law simply shifts the advantage away from criminals, and levels the field so law-abiding citizens can exercise their rights.<\/p>\n
Time will tell how this law will play out for Idaho. If any of the other states who passed it are an indication of the future, Idaho will see a reduction in crime. It will be interesting to see which states take the next step in expanding gun owners\u2019 Second Amendment rights by passing Constitutional Carry.<\/p>\n
