In a tragic irony, he was killed in an ambush by terrorists backed by our own\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2016\/07\/08\/first-of-murdered-dallas-cops-identified-as-former-marine.html?ESRC=todayinmil.sm\">government right here in this country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After serving in the Marines, Thompson later worked for a private Pentagon contractor that hired and trained Iraqi and Afghan police in the concepts of &#8220;democratic policing.&#8221; The instruction included training in how to avoid an ambush, according to his LinkedIn page.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was responsible for the day to day operations conducted by our American police officers who trained and mentored the Iraqi Police,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He also served as an instructor at the Dallas police academy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While teaching at the Police Academy, I instructed courses to new recruits on different subject matter, as well as instruction to veteran police officers on state mandated courses,&#8221; Thompson wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s a testament to Obama&#8217;s horrifying actions that police officers in America now face the same danger as those in Iraq or Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Read the Original Article at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frontpagemag.com\/point\/263444\/first-murdered-officer-trained-iraqi-and-afghan-daniel-greenfield\">Front Page Mag<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Officer Brent Thompson has been identified as one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/07\/08\/us\/philando-castile-alton-sterling-protests\/index.html\">5 Dallas police officers killed<\/a> in Thursday\u2019s sniper attack. Thompson, an officer with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dart.org\/\">Dallas Area Rapid Transit system<\/a>, was the first of the 5 officers who died to be named.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson, 43, had served in dangerous places before: He was an international police trainer who mentored Iraqi and Afghan police in the concepts of \u201cdemocratic policing,\u201d training Afghan officers how to avoid an ambush, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/09\/05\/world\/asia\/05afghan.html\">2006 New York Times article quoting him<\/a> and his own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/brent-thompson-98951580\">LinkedIn<\/a> page. He\u2019d also previously trained American police officers in active shooters. He was also a father and a grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>In the mass shooting, 11 officers were shot in all and 5 were killed, a death toll that climbed throughout the night. Dallas Police Chief David Brown said in a live press conference that it\u2019s believed at least four suspects committed the organized assault on police, triangulating them with elevated sniper positions, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/07\/08\/us\/philando-castile-alton-sterling-protests\/index.html\">The New York Times said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three suspects were in custody and being interrogated; one was holed up in a garage in a standoff, shooting at and threatening police; although reports came in just before 3 a.m. that he died, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/07\/08\/us\/philando-castile-alton-sterling-protests\/index.html\">according to CNN<\/a>. The shootings erupted at a Black Lives Matter protest against the police shootings of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/07\/07\/us\/baton-rouge-alton-sterling-shooting\/\">Alton Sterling<\/a> in Baton Rouge and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/appalled-minnesota-governor-says-philando-castile-would-be-alive-if-n605496\">Philando Castile<\/a> in Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>1. Thompson Taught Afghan Police Officers How to Survive an \u2018Ambush\u2019 &amp; Also Mentored Iraqi Police in \u2018Democratic Policing\u2019<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1211601\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1211601\" src=\"https:\/\/heavyeditorial.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/07\/brenthompson41.jpg?quality=65&amp;strip=all&amp;strip=all\" alt=\"(Facebook\/Brent Thompson)\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Facebook\/Brent Thompson)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to his LinkedIn page, Thompson was chief of operations for Southern Iraq for<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dyn-intl.com\/careers\/overview\/\">DynCorp International<\/a>, a private military contracter. \u201cI was responsible for the day to day operations conducted by our American police officers who trained and mentored the Iraqi Police, \u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy area of responsibility was the Special Programs Units (Baghdad, Iraq), Training Teams located at the US Embassy (South), Camp Echo, Camp Delta, Basrah, and Babel. These teams covered Iraq from Baghdad to the southern border with Kuwait. I also worked in Northern Iraq: Mosul, Haman Al Lil, Duhook, Talifar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also served in Afghanistan. \u201cI also was in Afghanistan (Helmand and Khandahar Provinces); I was a Team Leader there and Lead Mentor to the Southern Provincial Police Chief. In all locations we mentored and taught our Iraqi\/Afghan counterparts democratic policing, and assisted in the establishment of the police departments in those location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/09\/05\/world\/asia\/05afghan.html\">The New York Times wrote<\/a> a story chronicling the difficulties inherent in training the Afghan police force, including the dangers to the American trainers. The story said that America sent an eight-man DynCorp \u201csaturation\u201d training team to Lashkar Gah, and assigned Thompson to lead it. The Times called Thompson \u201ca 33-year-old former police officer from Dallas.\u201d Thompson, the newspaper said, determined that \u201cAmerican officials calculated that six Afghan policemen were dying for every soldier in the National Army who was killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Half of the team\u2019s two-week training course included teaching Afghan police military skills, \u201clike how to launch or survive an ambush,\u201d said the Times\u2019 article. \u201cMr. Thompson, who trained the police in Iraq for DynCorp, said the Afghan police were more poorly equipped than their Iraqi counterparts. In one recent Afghan class, he said, 40 police officers shared 15 rifles,\u201d the newspaper said.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>4. Three other DART officers were shot, but they are expected to recover. The other officers who died are with the Dallas Police Department. DART formed in 1989. According to his LinkedIn page, Thompson had worked for the DART system since 2009. He wrote, \u201cI patrol the Northwest sector for the DART systems. Semper Fi, Brent Thompson, Former Active Duty Marine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monica Moody, who is from the town where Thompson graduated from high school, wrote on Facebook, \u201cThis man was my classmate and friend, as he was a friend to many. a father, a brother, a son, a brave and honorable man who served our country and community. I don\u2019t have the words to express the sadness I feel. I can only pray for his family and loved ones, and though I have little hope for it, for this sick world we live in. I will remember him.
