The woman told investigators she met\u00a0Timothy Jay Vafeades at the Sapp Brothers truck stop in Salt Lake City. It was April 2012, and she got into his tractor-trailer after agreeing to get\u00a0dinner with him, according to court documents.<\/p>\n

But about 10 minutes into the drive, Vafeades told her that \u00a0\u201cthey were not going to dinner and that she was going on the road with him for a week or more,\u201d an FBI agent wrote in a criminal affidavit. \u201cShe reported that she knew she could not do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

For months after that,\u00a0investigators allege, Vafeades\u00a0forced the woman to live with him, work on the truck \u2014 and have sex with him almost daily.<\/p>\n

Vafeades told the woman \u201cshe was his \u2018slave\u2019 on the truck,\u201d and he beat her often, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n

Vafeades was eventually charged with kidnapping the woman and one other and transporting them for illegal sexual activity aboard his truck, dubbed the \u201cTwilight Express.\u201d Prosecutors alleged that he also kidnapped and sexually assaulted four\u00a0other\u00a0women over a span of two decades, subjecting them to beatings and holding them captive as he drove his truck across the country.<\/p>\n

On Thursday,\u00a0Vafeades, 56, agreed to a plea deal just days before his trial was to begin.<\/p>\n

He pleaded guilty to the illegal sexual activity charges. The kidnapping charges were dropped in exchange.<\/p>\n

The deal\u00a0means Vafeades\u00a0\u2014 referred to by local media as the \u201cvampire\u201d truck driver because of the fangs on false teeth he once wore\u00a0\u2014 could face more than 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n
