She will be sorely missed. -SF<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<div class=\"clear\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16805\" src=\"https:\/\/hcsblogdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/summitt.jpeg?w=620\" alt=\"Summitt\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"divStoryColumn\">\n<article>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"divTitle\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Pat Summitt, Legendary Basketball Coach, Dies at 64<\/strong><\/div>\n<div id=\"divDeck\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Tennessee&#8217;s Summitt had more Division I wins than any coach in NCAA history<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<p class=\"storyParagraph\">Pat Summitt, whose work ethic (and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.local8now.com\/content\/news\/The-Summitt-Stare-384598991.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">famous intense stare<\/a>) was born on her family&#8217;s farm and propelled her to rack up more wins than any other basketball coach (men&#8217;s or women&#8217;s) in NCAA Division I history, died Tuesday at age 64, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newser.com\/article\/98e23921f2ae4e7ba57e86cd25f6c8d8\/pat-summitt-the-winningest-coach-in-division-i-college-basketball-history-who-boosted-womens-game.html\">AP<\/a> reports. &#8220;It is with tremendous sadness that I announce the passing of my mother, Patricia Sue Head Summitt,&#8221; her son, 25-year-old Tyler Summitt, announced on the <a href=\"http:\/\/patsummitt.org\/coach_summitt.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pat Summitt Foundation<\/a> website. &#8220;She died peacefully [Tuesday morning] at Sherrill [Hills] Senior Living in Knoxville surrounded by those who loved her most.&#8221; Summitt had to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newser.com\/story\/144339\/tennessee-coach-pat-summitt-steps-down.html\">retire at age 59<\/a> due to early-onset Alzheimer&#8217;s, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/sports\/wp\/2016\/06\/28\/pat-summitt-legendary-former-coach-of-lady-vols-dies-at-64\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a><\/em> reports, and Tyler Summitt notes that his mom fought the disease with &#8220;bravely fierce determination, just as she did with every opponent she ever faced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyParagraph\">Pat Summitt was barely in her 20s when she started coaching the Tennessee Lady Vols, and over nearly four decades, she built up an astounding record. Under her direction, the Lady Vols took home eight national championships (only UCLA&#8217;s John Wooden coached his team to more championship wins), per <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/womens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/7829139\/pat-summitt-milestone-wins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN<\/a>, and made it to the Final Four 22 times (18 times as an NCAA team), <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Sports\/tennessee-legend-pat-summitt\/story?id=40181475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC News<\/a> notes. She ended her coaching career with 1,098 wins under her belt when she retired in 2012, and she also coached the US women&#8217;s basketball team to its first gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2016\/06\/28\/483612431\/pat-summitt-legendary-tennessee-basketball-coach-dies-at-64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a> notes. &#8220;I grew up on a dairy farm,&#8221; she told NPR in 2009. &#8220;Cows \u2026 don&#8217;t take a day off. \u2026 [My father] demanded a lot from the five children, but in a good way.
