Soldiers stand watch over bakeries. The police fire rubber bullets at desperate mobs storming grocery stores, pharmacies and butcher shops. A 4-year-old girl was shot to death as street gangs fought over food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\"><a title=\"Times article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/09\/world\/americas\/a-reporter-travels-through-venezuela-a-country-teetering-on-the-brink.html?_r=0\">Venezuela<\/a> is convulsing from hunger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">Hundreds of people here in the city of Cuman\u00e1, home to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Antonio-Jose-de-Sucre\">one of the region\u2019s independence heroes<\/a>, marched on a supermarket in recent days, screaming for food. They forced open a large metal gate and poured inside. They snatched water, flour, cornmeal, salt, sugar, potatoes, anything they could find, leaving behind only broken freezers and overturned shelves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">And they showed that even in a country with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/28\/world\/americas\/venezuela-crisis-what-next.html\">the largest oil reserves in the world<\/a>, it is possible for people to riot because there is not enough food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">In the last two weeks alone, more than 50 food riots, protests and mass looting have erupted around the country. Scores of businesses have been stripped bare or destroyed. At least five people have been killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">This is precisely the <a class=\"meta-loc\" title=\"More news and information about Venezuela.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/venezuela\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">Venezuela<\/a> its leaders vowed to prevent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">In one of the nation\u2019s worst moments, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/03\/01\/world\/dozens-of-venezuelans-killed-in-riots-over-price-increases.html\">riots spread from Caracas, the capital, in 1989<\/a>, leaving hundreds dead at the hands of security forces. Known as the \u201cCaracazo,\u201d or the \u201cCaracas clash,\u201d they were set off by low oil prices, cuts in subsidies and a population that was suddenly impoverished.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\">The event seared the memory of a future president, Hugo Ch\u00e1vez, who said the country\u2019s inability to provide for its people, and the state\u2019s repression of the uprising, were the reasons Venezuela needed a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/27\/world\/americas\/foes-of-hugo-chavez-in-venezuela-see-opportunity-in-houses-he-built.html\">socialist revolution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">Now his successors find themselves in a similar bind \u2014 or maybe even worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">The nation is anxiously searching for ways to feed itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-2\">\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\">The <a title=\"Times article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/16\/world\/americas\/dying-infants-and-no-medicine-inside-venezuelas-failing-hospitals.html\">economic collapse<\/a> of recent years has left it unable to produce enough food on its own or import what it needs from abroad. Cities have been militarized under an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/28\/world\/americas\/venezuela-economic-government-collapse.html\">emergency decree<\/a> from President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, the man Mr. Ch\u00e1vez picked to carry on with his revolution before he died three years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">\u201cIf there is no food, there will be more riots,\u201d said Raibelis Henriquez, 19, who waited all day for bread in Cuman\u00e1, where at least 22 businesses were attacked in a single day last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">But while the riots and clashes punctuate the country with alarm, it is the hunger that remains the constant source of unease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">A staggering 87 percent of Venezuelans say they do not have money to buy enough food, the most recent assessment of living standards by Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar University found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">Read the Remainder at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/20\/world\/americas\/venezuelans-ransack-stores-as-hunger-stalks-crumbling-nation.html?em_pos=large&amp;emc=edit_nn_20160621&amp;nl=morning-briefing&amp;nlid=75830594&amp;_r=0\">NY Times<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is downright Apocalyptic in Venezuela folks.
