A century later during the Franco-Prussian War, the French again deployed observation balloons\u200a\u2014\u200aand when Prussian troops besieged Paris, they became a vital lifeline out of the encircled city.<\/p>\n<p id=\"dde5\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Which is why the Prussians developed the <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Ballon Kanone<\/em>\u2014history\u2019s first purpose-made anti-aircraft gun.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7835\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--figure\">The Prussians cut all communications between Paris and the provincial French forces and the first balloon, <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Neptune<\/em>, left the city on Sept. 23, 1870, with regular flights beginning three days later. These flights carried supplies, 164 passengers and mail at a cost to senders of 20 <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">centimes<\/em> per letter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"983a\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Sixty-six balloon flights carried approximately 2.5 million letters during the siege.
