During the Normandy invasion, he stormed Juno Beach and took out two snipers before he\u00a0was struck by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/index.php\/2010\/11\/the-actor-who-played-scotty-on-star-trek-was-shot-six-times-on-d-day\/\">six bullets from a machine gun, according to website Today I Found Out<\/a>. He lost part of a finger, but the\u00a0silver cigarette case in his pocket stopped a bullet from piercing his heart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vaop-breakpoint\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-module clearfix\">\n<h3 class=\"slide-title\">David Niven<\/h3>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<div class=\"KonaFilter image-container slide-image on-image\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"slide-image on-image aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/static3.businessinsider.de\/image\/5755e3b8dd089527248b4a37-1200\/david-niven.jpg\" alt=\"David Niven\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Academy Award-winning British thespian David Niven became a\u00a0lieutenant-colonel of the British Commandos during the Second World War. In the D-Day invasion, <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2014\/06\/06\/5-famous-heroes-of-d-day-including-berra-and-salinger\/\">he commanded the Phantom Signals Unit, according to the New York Post.<\/a> This unit was responsible for keeping rear commanders informed on enemy positions.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, he declined to speak much about his military experience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vaop-breakpoint\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-module clearfix\">\n<h3 class=\"slide-title\">Yogi Berra<\/h3>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<div class=\"KonaFilter image-container slide-image on-image\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"slide-image on-image\" src=\"http:\/\/static4.businessinsider.de\/image\/5755e3b8dd089527248b4a38-1200\/yogi-berra.jpg\" alt=\"Yogi Berra\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Famed baseball catcher Yogi Berra helped to storm Normandy by manning\u00a0a Naval support craft. The vessel\u00a0fired rockets at enemy positions on Omaha Beach.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Post reports that Seaman Second Class Berra\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2014\/06\/06\/5-famous-heroes-of-d-day-including-berra-and-salinger\/\">manned a machine gun during the battle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-module clearfix\">\n<h3 class=\"slide-title\">Medgar Evers<\/h3>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<div class=\"KonaFilter image-container slide-image on-image\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"slide-image on-image\" src=\"http:\/\/static3.businessinsider.de\/image\/5755e3b9dd089527248b4a39-1200\/medgar-evers.jpg\" alt=\"Medgar Evers\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 1963, activist Medgar Evers was assassinated due to his efforts to promote civil rights for African Americans. Decades earlier,\u00a0Evers served in the\u00a0325th Port Company during WWII, eventually rising to the rank of sergeant.
