{"id":14933,"date":"2016-05-03T09:02:02","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T14:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hcstx.org\/?p=14933"},"modified":"2016-05-03T09:02:02","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T14:02:02","slug":"natural-disaster-survival-another-cautionary-tale-about-awareness-and-preparation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetacticalhermit.com\/index.php\/2016\/05\/03\/natural-disaster-survival-another-cautionary-tale-about-awareness-and-preparation\/","title":{"rendered":"Natural Disaster Survival: Another Cautionary Tale about Awareness and Preparation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14934\" src=\"https:\/\/hcsblogdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/05\/flooding.jpg\" alt=\"flooding\" width=\"500\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This last round of storms and flooding in my home state of Texas claimed the lives of 6 people. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcdfw.com\/news\/local\/Overnight-Flooding-Leaves-5-Dead-Including-4-Children-377679511.html\"><strong>Five of them, a Great-Grandmother and 4 Children drowned while trying to escape the flood waters.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bottom line \u00a0is that it is hard to imagine somebody drowning in their own front yard, but it is entirely possible when your home sits in a low lying area with a huge creek running behind it, the ground is already saturated from previous storms and it rains 7 1\/2 inches in under an hour. This is the perfect mix of circumstances for a disaster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some things to Consider:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>YOU<\/strong> and <strong>YOU ALONE<\/strong> are responsible for your safety.<strong> NOT<\/strong> FEMA, and<strong> NOT\u00a0<\/strong>your local Police or Fire Dept.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare <strong>NOW<\/strong> for Natural Disasters. Have a plan for Tornadoes, Hurricanes and Flooding. Routinely discuss and <strong>DRILL<\/strong> on these plans with your family.<\/li>\n<li>Pay Attention to the Weather! <strong>DO NOT<\/strong> depend on your local weatherman to send you a text or email telling you bad weather is coming!<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kaito-Powered-Emergency-Flashlight-Cellphone\/dp\/B00QH9PD6Y\/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1462280165&amp;sr=8-7&amp;keywords=voyager+NOAA\"> NOAA radio<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0NOW that can be charged with a hand crank and solar energy in the event the power goes out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>BE AWARE<\/strong> of your Surroundings. Know if your home sits in a flood plane or if there is a river or creek that floods when it rains heavily. Know the flood stages of these rivers and creeks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DO NOT WAIT<\/strong> until the last minute to act. Better to be overly cautious than Dead. If Flooding is expected, <strong>LEAVE<\/strong> while the roads are still passable and get to higher ground.<\/li>\n<li>If you do Live in a flood plane or near a River, <strong>PREPARE FOR THE WORST CASE SCENARIO<\/strong> by having a flat bottom boat and life jackets.
