Him and William E. Fairbairn were responsible for training OSS operatives in the &#8220;Black Arts&#8221; during WW2. Later in life, the late Colonel Applegate had to use a cane to get around and developed a literal arsenal of techniques for the cane that put many an evildoer in the hospital and are still being taught and used today. -SF<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"postSubtitle\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"postSubtitle\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-14404\" src=\"https:\/\/hcsblogdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/waffle.jpg?w=620\" alt=\"waffle\" width=\"620\" height=\"310\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"postSubtitle\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"postSubtitle\">A would-be robber with a fake rifle was shut down by a 70-year-old Vietnam veteran with a cane.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"articlePostBody\">\n<div class=\"articlePostContent\">\n<div class=\"postContent\">\n<p>In the early morning of April 2, 70-year-old Philip Brooks was eating his breakfast at a Waffle House in Fayetteville, North Carolina, when a man came in with a gun.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for the gun-wielding man, Brooks had seen his share of rifles.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks was in his regular seat near the register, when the man, brandishing what looked like an AK-47, began demanding money from the cash register, <a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wral.com\/vietnam-vet-foils-waffle-house-robbery-with-cane\/15629326\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reports WRAL.<\/a> Customers ran for safety and one woman fled to the restroom with her kids, where she called the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first three years, I was in the infantry,\u201d Brooks told WRAL. \u201cI did two tours in Vietnam, so I got to see a lot of AK-47s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Brooks got a better look at the weapon, he realized the rifle was made almost entirely of wood. It also had no trigger, trigger guard, or receiver group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the working parts were missing, so I just told the girls, \u2018Don\u2019t give him anything. That\u2019s a fake gun,\u2019\u201d Brooks told WRAL.<\/p>\n<p>Pointing the fake weapon at Brooks, the robber allegedly said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m for real,\u201d presumably in an effort to intimidate Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI showed him how real I was,\u201d Brooks said with a chuckle. \u201cI hit him in the nose with my cane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the two circled, cane and phony rifle in hand, they parried blows for a few moments until other customers jumped in and chased the robber off.
