Secret Nazi Journal Reveals Inner Workings of Third Reich<\/h1>\n

\u201cBetween 1936 and 1944, the Nazi mastermind kept a secret journal detailing his life in the corridors of power.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n

ALFRED ROSENBERG<\/a><\/strong> was a true believer.<\/p>\n

Remembered as the \u201cchief philosopher\u201d of the Third Reich, the Estonian-born National Socialist\u00a0was\u00a0member of Adolf Hitler\u2019s early inner circle and\u00a0helped author some of the\u00a0party\u2019s most notorious policies. Rosenberg\u2019s fingerprints are on everything from the movement\u2019s\u00a0notions of Aryan supremacy<\/a> and the concept of Lebensraum<\/a><\/em> or \u201cLiving Space\u201d to\u00a0its\u00a0pathological hatred of Jews<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following the\u00a01933 Nazi take-over of Germany<\/a>, the 36-year-old intellectual\u00a0helped run Germany\u2019s\u00a0foreign ministry and eventually headed up the Reich\u2019s department of ideological education, an agency that would be\u00a0known as the \u201cRosenberg Office\u201d. Later, he became chief administrator of Germany\u2019s\u00a0occupied territories in the Soviet Union. As a Reichsleiter<\/a><\/em>\u00a0or \u201cnational leader\u201d, he was equal in rank with such regime\u00a0luminaries as Martin Bormann<\/a>, Joseph Goebbels<\/a>, Rudolf Hess<\/a> and\u00a0Heinrich Himmler<\/a>.And as Hitler rose to power, so too did Rosenberg.<\/p>\n

A prolific writer, Rosenberg was editor of the official Nazi party newspaper, the V\u00f6lkischer Beobachter<\/a>,<\/em>and would go on to produce\u00a013 books. His best-selling Myth of the Twentieth Century<\/em><\/a>sold a staggering 1 million copies and eventually became\u00a0the most popular publication in the Third Reich after Hitler\u2019s own Mein Kampf<\/a><\/em>. In it, the self-described \u201cpagan\u201d railed against everything from Jews and Bolshevism to Christianity and Liberal Democracy.<\/p>\n

The Devil\u2019s Diary<\/h2>\n

Between 1936 and 1944, the Nazi mastermind kept a secret journal detailing his life in the corridors of power. In addition to chronicling his\u00a0political machinations,\u00a0the book\u2019s\u00a0425 hand-written pages contain glimpses into Rosenberg\u2019s\u00a0twisted\u00a0racial hatreds, his views on the the conduct of the war and his\u00a0petty rivalries\u00a0with party insiders. He even\u00a0recounts his frequent one-on-one meetings with his infamous boss.Interestingly, Rosenberg penned another book, although this one was not<\/em> for publication.<\/p>\n

One of only three diaries known to have been kept by the top Nazi officials (the others were from\u00a0Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels<\/a> and Hans Frank<\/a>, the governor-general of occupied Poland), Rosenberg\u2019s ramblings would go on to become a veritable treasure-trove of evidence for the Allied prosecutors at the Nuremberg war crimes trials<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lost and Found<\/h2>\n

A\u00a0new book by <\/span>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0bestselling author\u00a0<\/span>Robert K. Wittman\u00a0<\/a>and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist\u00a0<\/span>David Kinney<\/a>\u00a0entitled\u00a0<\/span>The Devil\u2019s Diary<\/a><\/em>\u00a0charts the long search to track down the lost journal, as well as the remarkable story of how it was finally recovered.<\/span>While excerpts of Rosenberg\u2019s log were read into the record during the famous proceedings, the original page mysteriously vanished after the author went to the gallows in 1946. Amazingly, they turned up<\/a> in Lewiston, N.Y.<\/a> in late 2013.<\/p>\n

Today, the property of the\u00a0United States Holocaust Memorial Museum<\/a> in Washington D.C.,Rosenberg\u2019s writings\u00a0are\u00a0free to view online<\/a>.\u00a0In the meantime, the publishers of The Devil\u2019s Diary<\/em> have compiled excerpts from the memoirs that reveal the dark inner thoughts of one of the Third Reich\u2019s most eccentric minds.
