The Project 677 Lada-class\u2014which Moscow is terminating after three units are completed\u2014has proven to be a disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two Lada-class Project 677 submarines will be delivered as scheduled \u2014 in 2018 and 2019,\u201d a spokesman for United Shipbuilding Corporation<a href=\"http:\/\/sputniknews.com\/military\/20160318\/1036508740\/lada-class-submarines.html\"> <u>told RIA Novosti.<\/u><\/a> \u201cThen the construction of the new non-nuclear Kalina-class submarines will be launched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separately, deputy Russian Navy commander Vice Adm. Alexander Fedotenkov told Rossiya 24 that construction of the new submarines would start shortly. \u201cThese are new-generation submarines. They are currently being developed,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/tass.ru\/en\/defense\/863322\"><u>Fedotenkov said.<\/u><\/a> \u201cThe construction of these submarines will start in the imminent future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not much is known about the Kalina-class except that Moscow intends to equip the new vessels with an air independent propulsion (AIP) system. Russia\u2019s current Kilo and sole Lada-class vessels do not currently incorporate an AIP\u2014which has already become standard on Western diesel boats.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow had planned to equip the Lada-class with an AIP, but those plans seem to have been dropped.
