You know those “warrant roundup” stings you see on TV sometimes…where the local Sheriffs office disguises itself as a company giving away free TV’s or something all in an effort to lure folks with Warrants out into the open? In an effort to defend against improvised explosive attacks, the Pentagon\u2019s research arm DARPA is looking to pay “crafty hobbyists” capable of turning household items into bombs.<\/h2>\n

Take a cursory look at\u00a0the warning labels on\u00a0the products beneath\u00a0your kitchen sink and it will come as\u00a0no surprise that danger-seeking chemists, engineers and ordinary citizens can turn common everyday objects into\u00a0deadly weapons.<\/p>\n

In an effort to\u00a0stay one step ahead of\u00a0possible improvised attacks, the Pentagon\u2019s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will pay people who can develop deadly devices from\u00a0consumer electronics, household chemicals, or other “commercially available technology.”<\/p>\n

“For decades, US national security was ensured, in\u00a0large part, by\u00a0a simple advantage: a near-monopoly on\u00a0access to\u00a0the most advanced technologies,” according to\u00a0an agency press release.<\/p>\n

“Increasingly, however, off-the-shelf equipment developed for\u00a0the transportation, construction, agricultural and other commercial sectors features highly sophisticated components, which resourceful adversaries can modify or combine to\u00a0create novel and unanticipated security threats.”<\/p>\n

The announcement sets very few parameters for\u00a0participants, only stressing that builders are not allowed to\u00a0do anything illegal.<\/p>\n

“Proposers are free to\u00a0reconfigure, repurpose, program, reprogram, modify, combine, or recombine commercially available technology in\u00a0any way within\u00a0the bounds of\u00a0local, state, and federal laws and regulations,” the announcement reads.<\/p>\n
