He’s built a catapult for axes, a Nerf gun that shoots scalpels, and a pump-action gun that fires throwing knives. His latest build takes that last project to its absurd extreme; this slingshot rifle shoots spinning knives. Why not?

At its core, the gun is a pretty regular slingshot that uses rubber bands to catapult the knife down a launching track. The unique part is that the whole barrel system is mounted on bearings, which let a power drill spin the knife and barrel as the gun is firing. The result? A projectile that comes out spinning, much the same way a bullet comes out of a rifled barrel.

The gun certainly works, but the rifling doesn’t have that much of a stabilizing effect. Even with a serious spin, the knives still tend to tumble after only a few feet. Sprave chalks it up a lack of precision machining (he is working with wood, after all) and/or the large surface area of the knife’s flat sides.

So no, a “rifled” knife gun is not exactly a practical firearm. But maybe that’s for the best.

Read the Original Article at Popular Mechanics

Our favorite mad German scientist Joerg Sprave has experimented with all kinds of unconventional guns that shoot sharp things.
