{"id":13063,"date":"2016-03-12T23:00:39","date_gmt":"2016-03-13T05:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hcstx.org\/?p=13063"},"modified":"2016-03-12T23:00:39","modified_gmt":"2016-03-13T05:00:39","slug":"war-is-my-life-a-journey-along-the-front-line-in-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetacticalhermit.com\/index.php\/2016\/03\/12\/war-is-my-life-a-journey-along-the-front-line-in-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;War is My Life&#8221;: A Journey Along The Front Line In Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13064\" src=\"https:\/\/hcsblogdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/uw1.jpg?w=620\" alt=\"UW1\" width=\"620\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>SHCHASTYA, Ukraine\u2014The late winter weather in Ukraine alternates among\u00a0frigid, cool, snow, and rain\u2014teasing the arrival of spring.<\/p>\n<p>The 2-year-old war, which has ravaged eastern Ukraine, killing more than 10,000 and displacing more than 1 million, is as fickle as the weather\u2014teasing the possibility of peace without ever achieving it.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides of the conflict renewed their commitment to the cease-fire in September, reducing the scale and intensity of the Ukraine war to a shadow of what it was during the fall of 2014 and the first few months of 2015.<\/p>\n<p>But the war is not over.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13065\" src=\"https:\/\/hcsblogdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/uw2.jpg?w=620\" alt=\"UW2\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During a six-day period from Feb. 27 to March 3, this correspondent visited Ukrainian troops deployed at both the front line and the rear echelon, stretching from the southernmost extension of the front lines outside the city of Mariupol to the war\u2019s northern limit near the town of Shchastya, outside the separatist-controlled city of Luhansk.<\/p>\n<p>Along the front lines, Ukrainian troops are dug in and ready for combat.<\/p>\n<p>As one soldier put it: \u201cThis is my life now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Combined Russian-separatist artillery, tank, mortar, and small arms attacks occur daily at hot spots near Donetsk, capital of the Donetsk People\u2019s Republic, one of two breakaway territories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like this every day,\u201d John Slobodyan, 23, a soldier in the Ukrainian army\u2019s 93rd Brigade, said.
