{"id":12294,"date":"2016-02-25T21:00:03","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T03:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hcstx.org\/?p=12294"},"modified":"2016-02-25T21:00:03","modified_gmt":"2016-02-26T03:00:03","slug":"profiles-in-courage-the-ww2-draft-dodger-who-turned-war-hero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thetacticalhermit.com\/index.php\/2016\/02\/25\/profiles-in-courage-the-ww2-draft-dodger-who-turned-war-hero\/","title":{"rendered":"Profiles in Courage: The WW2 Draft Dodger Who Turned War Hero"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>This is one amazing story and one of the reasons I absolutely Love Military History, specifically, WW2 History! -SF<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12295\" src=\"https:\/\/hcsblogdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/doss-medal-of-honor-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"Doss-Medal-of-Honor-230x300\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, when I first came home, I decided it would be a good thing for me to write a book.\u00a0 My first project, still unfinished, and now my 3<sup>rd<\/sup> project had the working title <em>\u201cPeople you wish you told your children about\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0 I had several chapters in my mind, Corrie Ten Boom<a href=\"http:\/\/havokjournal.com\/culture\/draft-dodger\/?utm_source=Havok+Journal&amp;utm_campaign=01bec8d3ae-Havok_Journal_Daily&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_566058f87c-01bec8d3ae-214561561#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[1]<\/a>, Peg Leg Joe<a href=\"http:\/\/havokjournal.com\/culture\/draft-dodger\/?utm_source=Havok+Journal&amp;utm_campaign=01bec8d3ae-Havok_Journal_Daily&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_566058f87c-01bec8d3ae-214561561#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[2]<\/a>, Irena Sendler<a href=\"http:\/\/havokjournal.com\/culture\/draft-dodger\/?utm_source=Havok+Journal&amp;utm_campaign=01bec8d3ae-Havok_Journal_Daily&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_566058f87c-01bec8d3ae-214561561#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[3]<\/a>, V\u00e1clav Havel<a href=\"http:\/\/havokjournal.com\/culture\/draft-dodger\/?utm_source=Havok+Journal&amp;utm_campaign=01bec8d3ae-Havok_Journal_Daily&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_566058f87c-01bec8d3ae-214561561#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[4]<\/a> and a few others but I needed a military entry.<\/p>\n<p>I bounced the idea off an old friend of mine, an Army Chaplain, he liked it.\u00a0 Then he asked me if I had ever heard of Desmond Doss.\u00a0 I had not. \u201cThat\u2019s OK; you would consider him a coward anyway.\u00a0 He was drafted in WWII and sued to avoid the draft\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He was a Conscientious Objector, a class of human for which I had a great deal of contempt. \u00a0My chaplain buddy told me Doss refused to eat meat, refused to work or train on Saturday and refused to carry a weapon of any kind.\u00a0 He sued for Conscientious Objector status and was granted exemption from conscription. \u00a0I muttered \u201cDamn Coward\u201d, under my breath.<\/p>\n<p>One of my pet peeves has always been Conscientious Objectors (COs).\u00a0 I come from a hard core military family and I have always felt my disdain for anyone who refused to fight for their flag was well founded and just.<\/p>\n<p>The Chaplain drew me into a conversation about WWII and we ended up at the invasion of Okinawa.\u00a0 I knew the story; US troops hit the beach and, although the landing was soft, when they tried to move inland the Japanese defending the Island put up an ugly fight. Weeks of foxhole to foxhole to cave to jungle fighting ensued. Casualties were very high.<\/p>\n<p>He told me about a medic in the 77th Infantry Division<a href=\"http:\/\/havokjournal.com\/culture\/draft-dodger\/?utm_source=Havok+Journal&amp;utm_campaign=01bec8d3ae-Havok_Journal_Daily&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_566058f87c-01bec8d3ae-214561561#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\">[5]<\/a>; by the time the 77<sup>th<\/sup> landed on the beaches of Okinawa this medic had already been awarded the Bronze Star with \u201cV\u201d device. \u00a0I asked my friend to continue, tell me about this medic, I might use him.<\/p>\n<p>The medic\u2019s unit, Baker Co., was ordered to take the \u201cMaeda Escarpment\u201d and the plateau above.\u00a0 On day one of the battle the medic repeatedly went up the escarpment to render aid to wounded comrades.\u00a0 Over the course of the Battle the medic was wounded several times.\u00a0 Each time, he treated himself and continued to move from wounded soldier to wounded soldier.\u00a0 I asked his full name.\u00a0 I wanted to research him and include the medic in my book.<\/p>\n<p>My friend said; \u201cDesmond T. Doss, Baker Co. 307<sup>th <\/sup>Regiment, 77th Infantry Div\u201d.\u00a0 It took a second but it finally clicked.\u00a0 \u201cHey\u2026 that makes no damn sense\u2026 You just told me he was coward\u2026 and now you\u2019re telling me he has a Bronze Star for Valor?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 He glanced at me with irritation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo! YOU are the one who called Doss a Coward; I know better.\u201d \u201cDoss sued for CO status but as soon as it was granted, he enlisted\u2026 and the Bronze Star is not his highest award.\u201d\u00a0 I stared for a moment. \u00a0\u201cYou\u2019re not gonna tell me a conscientious objector has The Medal\u2026\u00a0 Are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled a book from his shelf and handed it to me opened to the Medal of Honor Citation for Cpl. Desmond T.
