Spain: 7 Muslims arrested, sent arms to jihadis disguised as humanitarian aid<\/h1>\n

Remember this one the next time you hear about a Muslim who traveled to Syria from the U.K. or U.S., and then insists upon his return that he just went there for \u201chumanitarian\u201d reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeven arrested in Spain over suspected jihad links,\u201d AFP<\/a>, February 7, 2016:<\/p>\n

Madrid (AFP) \u2013 Spanish police said they arrested seven people on Sunday with suspected links to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State groups and uncovered an operation to smuggle arms to jihadists under the guise of humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n

The arrests were carried out in the eastern cities of Valencia and Alicante and in Spain\u2019s North African enclave of Ceuta, the police said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cFive are Spanish nationals of Syrian, Jordanian and Moroccan origin, and two are Syrian and Moroccan nationals,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

The arrests were made in the context of an investigation launched in 2014 into \u201cforeign structures\u201d providing logistical support for Islamic State \u2014 also called ISIL, ISIS or Daesh \u2014 and the Al-Nusra Front, an Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, police said.<\/p>\n

One of those arrested was a man who dispatched \u201cmilitary material, money, electronic and transmission material, firearms and precursors for making explosives\u201d to Syria and Iraq via a company, it said.<\/p>\n

This was shipped out in closed containers under the guise of humanitarian aid, and financed by \u201chawala,\u201d an informal system of payment based on trust that is far more difficult to trace than bank transfers\u2026.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
