With Winter Storm Jonas ripping the Deep South and the Eastern Seaboard a new butthole, I thought this piece from Duffel Blog would lighten things up a bit. Stay Safe, Stay off the Roads if you can and Stay Warm out there! -SF<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 D.C. National Guard 1st<\/sup> Lt. Patrick Hoover has taken a pledge to ignore his personal safety, family obligations and unscheduled telecommute to run towards the sound of snowflakes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always someone that just as everyone else is running away for their own protection will run back into the fray,\u201d said Hoover.\u00a0 \u201cThese are today\u2019s Spartans, sitting in cold armory so that others may sleep peaceably in their beds as frozen water falls.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like what Mr. Rogers said,\u201d added Hoover, munching on freshly delivered pizza. \u201cWhen bad things happen, look for the helpers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoover has made the decision, again and again, to follow National Guard values and face fear to overcome raindrops, snowflakes, power outages and large crowds to protect everything we hold dear as Americans.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce, I had to drive a Humvee with no snow tires to get a little old lady to her dialysis appointment.\u201d said Hoover.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s no way to train for that. You just need to reach deep inside yourself and know that the army has prepared you to handle this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The capital\u2019s inability\u00a0to\u00a0handle snow is legendary. To Hoover, the choice is about whether he was going to sit around complaining about it or become part of the solution.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw a riot break out in a Trader Joe\u2019s in Foggy Bottom over free-range, locally sourced chicken breast and organic Greek yogurt.\u201d Said Hoover.\u00a0 \u201cI wasn\u2019t going to stand by and ignore it. I called Metro Police, because I\u2019m an American hero. An American hero without weapons or arrest authority.\u201d<\/p>\n

National Guardsmen will be calming local residents\u2019 worries during Winter Storm Jonas by providing answers such as, \u201cI don\u2019t know, ask my sgt.,\u201d \u201cI haven\u2019t heard yet,\u201d and \u201cI think it\u2019s supposed to be nearby, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

On previous call ups, Hoover has selflessly picked out the peanut butter packets from MREs before giving them out in homeless shelters, eaten chili at a D.C. fire department and watched crowds at an all-star mega concert on the mall.<\/p>\n

SSgt Quishada Slaughter, Hoover\u2019s platoon sergeant, questions his lieutenant\u2019s motives.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe got here four hours early which is alright but I wasn\u2019t going to,\u201d said Slaughter. \u201cBut I think he\u2019s just doing it for the rescue sex. Bitches love rescues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Slaughter listed her motivations as similar to Hoover\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just neighbors helping neighbors out here.\u201d\u00a0 Said Slaughter.\u00a0 \u201cBy the way, to you have a charger for an iPhone 5?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoover will be awarded the army commendation medal for his work informing ten civilians that yes, the metro will close at 11pm and not reopen all weekend.<\/p>\n
